The whole premise of Scrubs feels like a Christmas special. It remains a consistently funny show, almost 15 years after it ended. The show’s ability to hit many poignant notes play with the heart strings, and provide laughs at the right moments, sets it apart from others like it. This Christmas edition sticks to that blueprint.

Scrubs S01 E11 – My Own Personal Jesus

It’s Christmas time at Sacred Heart, and no one except Turk feels like celebrating. Once the insanity of covering the Christmas night shift hits home, even Turk feels lost. Dr Cox gets J.D. to video the birth of a friend's baby, and as usual in his crusade to gain approval, nothing seems to go right for JD. And then there’s Elliot, who is having a crisis due to chief Kelso insisting that, as Elliot is a woman, she is destined to end up in OB-GYN statistically, much to her annoyance.

As early as the eleventh episode, Scrubs has you by all the emotional hooks. Christmas adds another layer to that, with the reality of what an emergency department has to deal with at the most “joyous” time of the year really put into perspective here. But once again, it’s not all doom and gloom, with sharp gags, particularly JD and Cox collaborating to save both their skins from Cox’s often-vengeful wife, shining through.

The episode’s leaning into Christian faith might be a little much for some, but it isn’t overdone and in the end, it sends a message of having faith in general. And on that level, it works. To be honest, the whole thing is worth a watch to see John C. McGinley in full makeup as The Grinch.
