Over its lifetime, Super Play reviewed more Super Nintendo games than any other magazine in the United Kingdom - 596 to be precise - so picking a sixth of them, let alone the order of merit, would never be an easy task. For the uninitiated, a new series here at Postcards of Pop Culture began recently, breaking down all 100 titles from Super Play’s ranking from bottom to top. And while Super Play’s word was regarded among the most reliable around, it wasn’t the only publication with an opinion.

As always, the Super Play overview provided in the entry post for Unirally was from the top 100 itself. The verdict from issue #29 reads:-

Unirally is better than it looks. But it’s a quirky game, and will appeal to the sort of people who love shaving hundredths of a second off their best times. Possibly Super Mario Kart fans.”

He said with prejudice. Next up is Nintendo Magazine System, who gave a much higher score of 92% a month earlier:-

“An unusual attraction for the Super NES demonstrating superb rendered images, and undoubtedly the best racer for quite some time. Buy it!”

Steady on there guys, might want to work on your grammar through all that excitement. How about the other publications too?

Total! magazine were also batting in the same field as NMS, as shown below.

Overall, Unirally was quite the surprise hit. Super Play may not have been taken aback like the other publications, but 85% is a strong score and it made the list. Personally, there are still very few faster racing experiences than this even today. I’m not one for shaving off lap times, but Unirally has plenty of challenge in its races to test anyone.

Come back next time for the review fallout of the next Super Play top 100 entry!
